Currently running at Riverside Studios in Hammersmith is the revival of Earthfall’s award winning 2005 production of ‘At Swim Two Boys’ (based on the novel by Jamie O’Neill). The scene is set against a gently flowing backdrop of a wall of water, conjuring up association of being sea-side where the bulk of story unfolds, and tells the moving tale of the relationship between two boys during the Easter Rising in Ireland in 1916 and war in Europe.

Directed by Jessica Cohen and Jim Ennis, the jaggered blend of testosterone fuelled dance, hypnotic live music, projected visual references and use of water which are cleverly incorporated into the production make for a sensory experience. From the moment the two boys first make eye contact, there is no denying the turmoil of emotions that proceed between them and how the political unrest surrounding them impacts on these emotions. The chemistry between performers Daniel Connor and Murilo Leite D’Imperio is simply electric and emotive.

I really don’t want to reveal any more of the storyline, this production just has to be seen. It has been well engineered to ensure that the rawness of the plot is perfectly captured and I couldn’t help but feel that the 60-70 minute run time was over all too soon, leaving me worryingly longing for more, even after an epic ending.

For the full experience, and for those not afraid of a light splashing of water, I’d recommend front row seats!

The show runs at Riverside Studios until the 25th of February after which it goes on a nationwide tour, for tickets and further details:

Arosa ski week has become one of the biggest Gay and Lesbian winter events in Europe. The vibrant and colourful week takes place from 8 – 15 January 2012 and is supported by Arosa and Swiss Tourism.

Last January, the organizers welcomed just about 400 participants from over 30 countries, from Australia to America and many others! Countless new friendships were made and people spent many unforgettable evenings. From skiing and snowboarding amid the beautiful Arosa mountain scenery and sun tanning on the Tschuggen Hut to dancing at night – in short: it was a fantastic time and the most successful Arosa Gay Ski Week ever!

In 2012, for the first time, the week will take place from Sunday to Sunday (8 days). This enables them to welcome additional weekend guests as of Thursday and to move the final party to the weekend. Many events will now also take place at either the new congress centre, the Kursaal, or the cosy lounge at the Hotel Seehof. The organizers do not get tired of looking for new theme parties and cultural highlights. Many visitors will enjoy skiing and snowboarding together, because where will you find new friends, if not on holiday? To make things even easier, «Single-Dinners» will be organized for everyone who has not already hooked up at the Welcome Party. And later at the «Sauna-Evening» with the promising theme «1001 Nights» new friends will be found quickly. So many opportunities and so little time! Luckily it is okay to turn the night into day while being on holiday. Otherwise, people might possibly miss the «I Love Disco»-Party, the «Splash Pool»-Party or the «White Snow Ball». The classical concert by Michel Dalberto (F) and Henri Demarquette (F) at the village church, the Fondue-Fun with night sledging and the notorious Drag Queen Race certainly belong again to the highlights of the week.

Nobody is born with skis on his feet. That is why the experienced team of the ABC Snow Sports School will be available during the whole week. The mere beauty of Arosa’s breathtaking winter scenery (snow guaranteed!) should be convincing enough to motivate the laziest couch potato to a downhill run on the piste. Experienced skiers and snowboarders will not be disappointed either. Arosa offers many challenging pistes and even a helicopter ride to discover the slopes of St.Moritz! Like a day at the beach, a day in the mountains can be very tiring and exhausting (do not forget your sunscreen!).
Fortunately, Arosa offers a wide variety of accommodation to please all sorts of demands. A room at one of the ten partner hotels is worth double: the hotels are not only prepared for (in the meantime very international)guests but the hotel package also includes the Event Gold Pass, which gives you access to all events, as well as a 20% discount on all ski and snowboard rentals at the Bananas Ski and Snowboard Centre Arosa.

GETTING THERE – WAY TO GO… www.gayskiweek.ch/en/arosa/direction

Despite the fact that the idyllic ski resort Arosa lies at the end of the Schanfigg valley, good transportation facilities allow guests to travel to Arosa in a comfortable and relaxed way. It is easy to reach the resort by car from Zurich, and also by train it is a piece of cake: ICE and IC trains take you to Chur and from there, you change to the «Arosa Train». The romantic trip takes another hour, but is certainly worth every minute. Trains regularly commute between Zurich-Kloten Airport and Zurich Main Station. From ZH main station you simply take the connecting train to Chur and then change to the «Arosa Train»

Sci-fi shows are scarce; ‘Starlight Express `and ‘Time` were very much part of 1980’s mulleted futurism. Medieval musicals are also rare; ’Camelot ‘and ‘Blondel` are unusual examples of a little knight music. Now the Menier attempts to fuse these two conflicting genres into a contemporary re-conceptualising of ‘Pippin`, Stephen Schwartz‘s hip hit show.
The show was originated on Broadway in 1972 by the god-like genius Bob fosse, as a follow up to Schwartz’s groundbreaking ‘Godspell` , a hippy retelling of the life of Christ. ‘Pippin` is another radical allegory about an innocent 9th century French prince, who rejects his warmongering father’s royal life, to go in search of meaning and truth. Director/Choreographer Mitch Sebastian has ambitiously envisaged this journey as a series of levels in a platform computer game which our hero enters, after being transported there by a mysterious Machiavellian ring master, played perfectly by a menacing Matt Rawle.

As the opening song ‘ Magic to do ` commences, the cast magically step through the walls of the space age interior brilliantly created by designer Timothy Bird incorporating a mass of Tron-like projections, in perfect synchronicity with the choreographed performances. Harry Hepple’s Pippin, begins his quest on level 1, battling his way through a ‘barbarous and bloody` war, feuding with his father, scheming with his mother and enjoying the pleasures of sexual initiation during an orgy of fantastic Fosse inspired erotica. Finally falling in love and discovering what it means to be alive. The songs punctuating the story are amongst Schwartz’s finest, exhilaratingly performed by the strong cast, most notably ‘Spread a little Sunshine’ sung by the fabulous Frances Ruffelle, brilliantly playing Pippin`s mother as a devious Dagenham Dame. Sweet young Carly Bawden, fresh from the underrated ‘Umbrellas of Cherbourg`, is funny and enchanting as his lover, singing the heartbreaking ‘I’ll guess I’ll miss the man` beautifully.

Although there are many highlights, I feel the complexity of the concept confuses the simplicity of the story, the platform levels as stages in Pippin’s life story are appropriate in Act 1, but during the romantic relationship development of Act 2, they seem incongruous. That said, the Fosse-que choreography is fun, the visuals inventive and the sweet soulful score, though occasionally overwhelmed by the loud rock accompaniment, is still a memorable treat. I doubt this will follow in the footsteps of other classic Menier musical productions and make a west end transition, which is unfortunate, as I prefer it to Schwartz’s recent huge success ’Wicked`

This has inspired me to think of another show that may be suitable for reworking as a computer game adventure. Surely ‘The Wizard of Oz` could be re-conceptualised, transporting teenager Dorothy from her Midwest bedroom console in to a trippy Technicolor world of talking animals, heartless androids and mutant munchkins, then in true Lara Croft style, battling flying monkeys and an evil witch in her quest to escape. Like a cyber version of ‘The Wiz`. Could be good…Could be terrible!!

Martin Green

Cold winter nights are perfect for this classic cocktail. Designed to Warm, comfort and relax you.

I always looked forward to illness as an excuse to fix myself hot toddies: whisky, lemon, honey and hot water. I am always impressed with a pub that serves them. They hit the spot when you have just battled against freezing winds or been rendered senseless by the crass cavalcade of Christmas. Currently vogueish is hot spiced cider; a lovely winter warmer, particularly when made with berry flavoured cider. Mulled wine can be hit or miss: too sweet and it’s like a Ribena mouthwash, too many bits and pieces and it’s like vomiting in reverse.

The hot toddy has long been a staple on the chicest cocktail menus, and many recipes are based on hot flavoured tea. You can easily invent your own versions. Try using peppermint tea with spiced rum and crushed limes for a hot mojito, or hibiscus tea with Chambord and sambucca.

RECIPE
This spiced toddy should warm your cockles:
Generous measure of Barcelo Gran Aneio Rum
Small measure of The Bitter Truth – Pimento Dram
4-5 dashes of The Bitter Truth – Orange Bitters
10 ml Sugar Syrup (made by dissolving 1 cup sugar in 2 cups water)
Hot Darjeeling Tea

Put all ingredients into a tea cup or glass and stir. Add orange peel and grate nutmeg on top.

Voila!

Where to buy:

The Bonnie & Wild is a Scottish part time restaurant sewing the best of British produce. Bonnie being Bonnie Gull Ltd, a seafood specialist catering company and Wild, being Wild Game Co. specialists in fresh seasonal wild game from the highlands.

Open Friday and Saturday evenings from seven and housed in M. Manze a traditional pie and mash shop in Chapel market Islington. Chef Iain Sim serves up a three-course menu for a very reasonable £29. You have the choice of three starters, three mains and a dessert or cheese plate. Side dishes are £3.50, chunky chips and a veg of the day. The menu changes weekly to ensure you get the best of seasonal produce. It is advisable to phone ahead to check the menu to see if it suits your palate.

I went with my Scottish friend David thinking he might enjoy a taste of home, he wasn‘t disappointed. Sitting in the classic wooden booths with the marble tables is a treat in itself.

Helen the very friendly front of house flits between the tables making sure all is well, Marco our waiter was very accommodating, guiding us through the menu.

We started with a Wild Highland Pheasant Broth with toasted tattie scone, which was packed with flavour rich and gamey, the tattie scone we could have eaten plates of. I had Pan-fried Chestnut Mushrooms on toasted ciabatta with a capers and dill cream, earthy mushrooms in a surprisingly light cream sauce, the capers adding a rewarding tang, delicious.

Happily we looked forward to our mains, Pan-fried Whiting fillets with a prawn, shallot and parsley sauce, I asked for it without the prawns as boringly I am allergic to shellfish, I’ve never known the pleasure of a lobster and anaphylactic shock is not that great a party piece, but I digress. Lovely white fillets well seasoned, soft and delicate, the sauce a perfect companion

BBQ Venison Haunch Fillet with balsamic roast carrots and red currant jus again beautifully cooked, succulent and tender, the sweetness of carrots working well with salty slightly bitter kale, I also have to mention the chunky chips as they were excellent, we do like a chip.

Dessert on this day was a sticky toffee pudding, a moist light sponge with custard and ice cream the perfect finish. Also on offer was a Selection of British cheeses, oatcakes, chutney and celery, self-explanatory.

As it’s a bring your own bottle, we did, as can you without the restrictions of a wine list, treat yourself to your favourite tippIe…

A very pleasant evening, the atmosphere was warm and friendly, oh and best of all its a bargain!

The Bonnie Gull Seafood Shack now has a sister branch which has just opened in the evenings at Cookes Pie and Mash Shop on Broadway Market E8.

Situated behind Lancaster Gate tube and a short stroll from Marble Arch, Angelus restaurant is a real find.

lt is a converted pub split into three areas; the dining room, a private room available for functions which seats 20 and a bar where you can eat drink and be merry. The dining room is a sophisticated art nouveau inspired space, free from blaring music and gaudy visual distractions, allowing you to concentrate on the traditional French (with a modern twist) menu.

Thierry Tomasin, co-owner and front of house, is charming. Rightfully proud he talked us through the menu pointing out recommendations and customer favourites. We began with a glass of house champagne, which is named after Thierry, an excellent palate cleanser. The wine list had a mind boggling 870 wines, predominantly French with prices to suit all budgets, we decided to let Thierry choose our wine by course which he was happy to do.

My dining companion Tim started with a creamy butternut squash soup with girolles accompanied by a fragrant homemade brioche scented with truffle oil. I opted for a marinated Loch Duart salmon with citrus fruits, herb creme fraiche and caviar. Both were delicious and disappeared quickly (must have been the stroll) and for the sake of reporting we ordered a third, beetroot Carpaccio with creamed goat’s cheese and delicate spiced cheese straws, this again was a great combination. The starters were accompanied by a light crisp sauvignon from the Loire.

A basket of assorted home made breads, which was frequently passed around, was difficult to refuse.

Main course was a roast stone bass, smoked garlic mash, confit of chicken wings and a red wine jus. The fish was beautifully cooked, the creamy mash was served with braised baby fennel and the wings added texture and flavour. Tim (the vegetarian) who is not always the easiest to cater for in a French restaurant tucked into millefeuille of wild mushroom and Jerusalem artichokes with balsamic cooked puy lentils, a stack of light pastry discs and an earthy mix of autumn on a plate. We enjoyed a more robust voignier from the Montpelier region with our main course.

Thierry recommended the assiette of desserts to us, which is a taster of all the desserts, although I felt it would have had me conveying this piece through a medium. We opted for a roast pear, rum and muscarado jelly with gingerbread ice cream. And my personal favourite, pannacotta with a chocolate and raisin fancier (it certainly was fancy) and a caramelized banana ice cream, all washed down with a sweet pruney sauterne.

Coffee came with petite fours which I somehow found room for. Tim ate the salted chocolate praline, which happens to be my favourite, and he assured me I would have loved it.

The staff are lovely, very knowledgeable and the atmosphere was buzzing with conversation and clinking glasses. I’ll be looking forward to returning and trying the brunch menu, although next time I must remember an elasticated waistband.

Starters £10.00 — 15.00
Mains £20.00 – 30.00
Desserts £10.00 – {14.00

On meeting Matthias Moever one needs to acknowledge three things from the outset: a) He’s very handsome. b) He’s very charming. c) He’s very intelligent. That in its self should be enough to get a profile in this esteemed publication but add to that an interesting and creative career (past and present) well, it’s a ‘no-brainer’.

Whilst researching for last month’s article on playrooms I was lucky enough to come across Matthias whose business is designing large apartments with a fetish, industrial style. And we are not talking just a coat of black paint with a wrought iron bed frame. Average time for completion of his ‘Grand Designs’ is 6 months and will set you back well above six figures. While for those who have more modest budgets Matthias will design you something on a much smaller scale – your broom cupboard perhaps?

So how did Matthias get involved? Well he was a lecturer at Berlin’s University of Art specialising in textiles and working alongside none other than Vivienne Westwood. After three years of promises to be accepted on a full time professorship never materialised, he was asked by the boss of London’s Hoist, a long time friend, to find him an apartment in Berlin he could convert into “play” apartments for those naughty weekends we are all so fond of in the Hauptstadt. Having found the perfect space for sale he was then asked to organise the design and building work as his friend could think of no-one better to do the job and no-one he trusted more. With contacts from friends of the Hoist friend who had stayed at the apartments more requests soon came his way and the rest is, as we say, history.

It’s also a real labour of love for Matthias as he has been active on the leather BDSM scene for many years. It was therefore natural that other projects soon followed including the redesign of the famous RoB-Apartments in Berlin, one of the most sought after fetish apartments in Schoneberg for rent. I was fortunate enough to view his last completed project and to also take a look at his current project which is close to completion (something two good friends of mine will be over the moon about as they are living in the same building and have been complaining for months about the noise levels!)

What is an ideal apartment to renovate? Matthias likes to find something in need of major work and also prefers it to be on the ground floor as there will usually be a connected cellar space. The last completed apartment (see pictures) was a tool shop in an old building (Alt-bau). On the face of it there was no cellar for this apartment but during the rebuilding process a trap-door was discovered, once access was gained a huge unused space below floor level was opened up and hey-presto! A spectacular play space! Upstairs is a mix of industrial chic and modernism with furnishings and art which fit the ambience perfectly. I hate to admit it but I went a very nasty shade of green about 2 seconds after stepping into that apartment. The kitchen and bathroom are modern and very high quality and all designed by Matthias while many of the other fittings are sourced from antique dealers and the abundant flea markets Berlin has to offer. For me an iron coffee table designed by Matthias stole the show coming in four parts shaped differently, you could use each piece separately or join them all together to form one large square table (something the owner found hard to do). The entrance to downstairs is an open metal staircase from the main living area which leads to the exquisitely laid out playroom. There really is everything here you could wish for from a sexual point of view and I hope to get invited to the next party!

After leaving this apartment we took a short walk to his current project which is in an 80s apartment building (Neu-bau). This was an office space and is huge with a circular frontage. Matthias had to get all the internal office walls knocked down to open up the space and install a gigantic metal spiral staircase between the two floors. But wait! In the middle of the staircase is a circular cage which is the height of the basement so your victim can be hoisted from above down to the depths below. I don’t think even Houdini would have been able to get out of that one. It’s sheer genius. While not complete yet, you can see that everything again is designed to exceptional levels with only the best materials being used. It’s going to be another amazing place when it’s finished and something else for Matthias to be proud of.

So what’s next? Well having worked non-stop for the past 12 months Matthias said he will take a short break until January when work begins on his next project for a couple of Americans from Hawaii. All nice work if you can get it and I know that when (let’s be positive after all) I make my first million I’ll be contacting Matthias to build me my “Grand Design”.

Often imitated but never bettered, Mari Wilson’s beehive ranks among the most iconic hairstyles of the eighties. In the decade that taste forgot, only Annie Lennox’s flame-haired crop and Boy George’s androgyne dreadlocks commanded more column inches.

Mari burst onto our teatime TV screens in 1982 like a bolt from the blue. Not because of her camp-as-Chrimbo backing band The Wilsations (though ‘Hank’, ‘Curt’ and ‘Wilbur’ weren’t exactly an eyesore) – no, it was that foot-high beehive teamed with floor-length lame on ‘Top of The Pops that made the 27 year old an instant star. And it didn’t hurt that her song ‘Just What I Always Wanted’ was an irresistible slice of retro-pop that wouldn’t have seemed out of place on the Sweet Charity soundtrack. “People just weren’t dressing up then!” Mari remembers when I chat to her in a Clerkenwell studio. “It was just after punk, and it was really unusual that I was dressed to the nines with a 12-piece band. And then afterwards of course there were The Eurythmics and ABC – bands that were all about dressing up.” And while Mari never had the shock-value of Pete Burns or Adam Ant, she was no stranger to controversy, with the Daily Mail (quelle surprise!) cattily remarking “Mari is dogged by the fact that her hairstyle has always been bigger than her recording successes} Ouch. But for better or worse, everyone was talking about her. And then, after a Smash Hits cover and string of Top 40 hits, she did the unthinkable, “In 1985, I walked away from my record contract. And it’s usually them dropping the artists! But I was really unhappy, and I wouldn’t make the high-energy Hazell Dean records that they wanted”

Now at the age of 57, Mari’s plunging her energies into two wildly different projects: a witty dance single ‘O.|.C.’ with London producer BoiSounds, and a stripped down covers record to be released in early 2012. She now lives in Crouch End, London with her 14 year-old daughter, and, free from
the manipulation of record company bigwigs, she’s able to pick and choose her projects. And although her hair-hopping up-do has been replaced with a sleek bob, she’ll always be Queen Of The Beehive. lust don‘t try to get between her and her Bristows.

Mari Wilson: We ordered it in crates! We used this brand called Bristows, and it stunk! To begin with I did it myself, and then when I got more well-known my hairdresser Peter started to travel with me everywhere. The bigger I got, the bigger the beehive got – just like Amy Winehouse’s! When we went to tour America, they tried to stop us taking our crate on the plane, and I said “[gasps] we have to, we have to!” They let us in the end!

OM: Did you wear a hair piece?
MW: No, it was all my own hair, all of it. Peter used to put heated rollers in, spraying as he wrapped the hair around them. And then the rollers would come out, and it would backcomb it all until I looked like Eraserhead! And then he would sculpt it. It was amazing, really. In fact, I met Joanna Lumley a couple of years ago…

OM: Well she did Patsy in Ab Fab, who had an incredible beehive as well.
MW: Exactly! Someone introduced us, and she said ‘Mari Wilson? I bow at your feet! You’re the one with the real beehive – how could mine compare?’ (laughs)

OM: Have you ever had drag queens doing you?
MW: Oh yeah! And I’ve had male fans in the eighties that would come to the gigs in beehives, dressed up as me!

OM: And how did they look?
MW: Not great, to be honest! But I’m quite happy for people to send me up.

OM: Well, that’s something I’ve always liked about you. I was watching the video for ‘Just What I Always Wanted’ earlier, and there’s a bit on Brighton pier where a boy looks at the candy floss, then the beehive, and he’s like ‘huh?’
MW: Oh yes! [laughs] I quite like camping it up and having a laugh.

OM: So how did your single O.I.C. with BoiSounds come about?
MW: Well, I met Ben who runs the label about 18 months ago through a mutual friend, and we just really hit it off. He said ‘I’ve written a song alled ‘O.I.C.’ and it’s a dance track. It really appealed to me because it was very different from the more stripped-down music I’m doing now. You know, I’m not snobbish about music – as long as it‘s a good song, I don’t care.

OM: I love in ‘O.I.C.’ where you sing ‘for all your titchy crimes’!
MW: Yeah, well we all know what that means! I actually did a PA at Trannyshack to promote the single, and The Very Miss Dusty O introduced me. It was hilarious! I’ve just recorded a Christmas single for BoiSounds with her and a few others – Vanilla Lush, Bag of Chips…

OM: And what about your new record? Why did you want to do an album of covers?
MW: Well, for the past few years I’ve been gigging with just two musicians – I call it Mari Wilson’s Threesome! And It’s a very torchey kind of performance, and totally different from my last album ‘Emotional Glamour’, which was very sixties and very produced. So I thought it was about time I recorded these songs. And although they‘re covers, every song is completely different from the original.

OM: You slow it down?
MW: Yes. I‘ve done ‘They Don’t Know’ by Kirsty MacColl, and ‘Don’t Get Me Wrong’ by The Pretenders – which has such beautiful lyrics. When you slow it down, you can really hear the poetry. And I’ve covered a song by a new artist that I love called Caitlin Rose.

OM: Oh, wasn’t she discovered on Youtube?
MW: I didn’t know that! But isn’t everyone these days? I think that record companies are very much involved with making it look like that.

OM: There’s always been myth-making around artists though.
MW: Oh yeah, and that’s part of the fun! I remember in 1982, my manager Tot Taylor called up the Evening Standard and told them that David Bowie had been spotted in HMV buying a Mari Wilson record – and they printed it! And why not? I quite like the whole fantasy thing, that’s exciting for me. I don’t mind all that.
