Xander Zhou’s Slick Approach
Xander Zhou’s collections are a perfect example of avant-garde ideas combined with a very modern and slick approach to menswear. For SS14, Zhou created a collection of pieces reminiscent of classic menswear with eccentric features. It included tops and jackets made of high-gloss material, tailored novelty tops and super-short shorts, coats adorned with photographic prints depicting content of different media, shirts and jackets with over-sized collars and cuffs.
Zhou set out to create fashion that plays with the ambiguity of perception and motivates people to engage in conversations and dialogues about what they perceive. His designs for SS 2014 are highly complicated and constructed, the details over the top, yet at the same time not aggressively so and the garments seem simple and accessible. The collection makes an almost conservative impression while paradoxically being one of the most avant-garde ones of the season, which means the garments are surely conversation-starters.
Zhou succeeded in creating clothes that channel the power of dress as an expression of individuality and the importance of subtle details within the strict confines of menswear.
