Kay Kwok Is A Hidden Force This SS14
Hong Kong-born designer Kay Kwok only launched his label this year after graduating with an MA in menswear from London College of Fashion in 2012, but is set to firmly establish himself in London’s menswear scene. With the help of GQ China he presented his second collection during London Collections: Men and certainly lived up to his supporters’ reputation.
With his SS 2014 collection titled “The Hidden Force”, Kwok invited us on “a spiritual adventure within earth’s current, and a play on the energy transferred within the galaxy.” What sounds like sci-fi paired with religious fanaticism translated well into a collection of over-sized V-neck tops, shorts, trousers and suits made of soft and super fine neoprene and leather-like material, as well as contemporary bags and plastic breast plates. The tops and jackets feature innovative cuts and avant-garde tailoring work, while Kwok replaced traditional buttons with hidden magnets and largely stepped away from the obligatory skinny trousers and slim-fit jackets, creating vast surfaces of grey, black and white infused with occasional large-scale futuristic prints.
The collection is a clear response to current tendencies towards environmentally friendly products. Kwok took the longing for well-made and sustainable clothing into the future by creating innovative pieces that show off the character of the material they’re made off and also challenge us to spiritually connect with our environment – exactly what you need if you’re a fashion conscious man who is concerned about the impact he has on the world around him.
