Gaultier Exhibition Heading To London
An exhibition dedicated to the work of the cutting-edge French couturier Jean Paul Gaultier is coming to London. The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk, the first major display dedicated to Gultier, will be held at the Barbican in spring next year.
Over 140 outfits will be exhibited, including Madonna’s now iconic conical bra and corset, as worn on stage during her 1990 Blonde Ambition tour. Pieces worn by Kylie Minogue, Bjork and Dita Von Teese will also go on display.
“The English were the first ones to come to my shows and appreciate my fashion,” explained Gaultier. “I am super excited that the show is coming to London. If there is one place other than Paris that I should like to live in, it is London.”
Described as a “dynamic installation”, it will also include footage of catwalk shows, music videos and films. Photography from collaborators including David LaChapelle and Andy Warhol will feature alongside nautical sailor-stripes, and both couture and ready-to-wear pieces from throughout the designer’s extensive career – most of which come from his personal collection.
The exhibition, which was initiated and produced by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, will open at the Barbican from April 2014.
