Homotopia – Alternative Miss Liverpool

Homotopia - Alternative Miss Liverpool

Day 2, and the special guests are arriving for the Homotopia highlight event, the inaugural ‘Alternative Miss Liverpool`. Fenella Fielding, Andrew Logan, David Hoyle and local lad offering full support, Holly Johnson.

400 drag kings, queens, hairdressers, cross-dressers, liver birds and liver boys pack into the two tier venue, screaming from the balcony as our host the divine David Hoyle, descends the staircase in a specially created purple bloomsbury bohemian gown. He demands his usual’ total fucking silence` before introducing the judges Fenella Fielding and Andrew Logan, who seem completely at ease with the madness surrounding them, of course they are used to it, Andrews world famous event has inspired tonight’s proceedings.

25 contestants, a creative collection of dollies, trannies, scallys and housewives appear in outlandish outfits, then strut along the catwalk, before a gentle grilling by Mr Hoyle about their frocks, inspiration and thoughts on love, occasionally reducing our host to overwhelming emotions with their sweet sentiments. One entrant claimed her colorful creation of plastic flowers to be a tribute to the ‘Summer of love`, although Mr Hoyle dryly quipped, that it looked more like a homage to’ Gardeners question time`. As the show continued, Miss Queen Ishtar, Miss Caz & Brittany and Miss Countess Vilheminia all stand out in categories of poise , personality and originality.

During the judges final deliberation we are treated to a wonderful surprise, bellowing from behind the tinsel curtain emerges singing sensation ‘ Gâteaux Chocolate`. His enormous vocal rendition of ‘Nothing compares to you` wows the crowd, his large frame is covered in cream tangerine tulle, beneath the tutu explosion appear two big black thunder thighs, with knee high lemon pop-socks pulled up and over his high heels. The entire auditorium erupt in rapture, falling instantly in love with his powerful voice, glittering eyes and beautiful smile.

And the winner is….announces Fenella… Miss Voodou!! In her scarlet Marie Antoinette wig and enormous ball-gown, she is crowned the very first  ’Alternative Miss Liverpool’. The incredible costume was created by Thelma Nadine, the amazing talent behind the ‘ Big fat gypsy wedding` dresses and  made entirely from red, orange and magenta hairpieces. Miss Voodou was the favorite to win and deservedly so.

As the disco commences, the balloons descend, not intentionally, but due to some naughty scally boys ripping them off the balcony.

The event is a resounding success and hopefully will be the first of many more to come.
