Skate Somerset House

Located in the breathtakingly beautiful courtyard of Somerset House, the annual outdoor ice skating arena opens next week. Presented by Tiffany & Co, the venue will be transformed into a winter wonderland from 22nd of November until the 2nd of January.

With various Club Nights, Lunchtime Dance Workouts, Skate Classes and Eating/Drinking/Shopping all on offer it promises a fantastic way to while away a few hours and get into the festive spirit.

Bookings can be made online or at the venue, judging by popularity over the past few years it is advisable to book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Filmmakers David Weissman and Bill Weber co-directed the 2001 documentary, The Cockettes, chronicling San Francisco’s legendary theater troupe of hippies and drag queens, 1969 – 1972.  We Were Here revisits San Francisco a decade later, as its flourishing gay community is hit with an unimaginable disaster. Sickboy - Heaven&Earth

Following his smash 2008 exhibition, Stay Free – which saw Sickboy transform a Victorian tram shed into a 3D Willy Wonka-esque playground (with balaclava-clad Oompa Loompas running amok and a 14ft factory installation churning out art) – the artist presents his most spectacular showcase yet in the shape of Heaven & Earth. A celebration of earthly sins and heavenly fantasies, with collaborations from some of the biggest names in the global scene, Heaven & Earth sees Sickboy figuratively fall from grace into one of his own worlds, calling upon 12 of his fellow street art figureheads to plunge into the depths of darkest conscious.

The Homotopia queer arts and culture festival has been successfully running for the last 8 years under the creative direction of  enthusiastic  visionary Gary Everett , who presents,  during a month of diverse programming , an exciting array of art exhibitions, theatre, dance, films , seminars, and dress up events.

GFEST

GFEST – Gaywise FESTival in London is an annual Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) cross-art event in November that promises to showcase challenging art works and colourful talent from around the world. Celebrating creativity, pushing boundaries and confronting prejudices.

Running from 7 to 20 November GFEST 2011 is a celebration of creativity and visual splendour exploring the minds and motives shaping the movement which is as artistic as it is political.

The festival includes a visual arts exhibition, short films screening, performances, workshops and debates that take place throughout venues in London. They will all engage with contemporary LGBTQ themes, challenging boundaries to tackle prejudices. (more…)

First Out Cafe Bar Bows

For 25 years First Out cafe bar has been the heart of the local gay and lesbian community, offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere combined with quirky art installations. The combination of delicious vegetarian food, cakes, cookies and Fairtrade coffee served on the ground floor and the chilled bar downstairs have provided a haven for people of all ages and sexual disposition.
The final exhibition to grace the walls will be ‘LOADED’ by London born artist Adam Graff, an international award winning illustrator and educator who also heads the BA level 5 illustration pathway at the University of Hertfordshire. Adam has a very interesting story to tell through his work so be sure to go grab one last coffee, admire his creations and bid farewell to First Out.

GFEST

GFEST is now in its 5th year and this year it runs from 7 to 20 November in venues throughout London showcasing new and established artists and arts organisations from around the world.

The visual arts exhibition takes place from 7 – 19 November at the Dreamspace Gallery near The Barbican.

The short films section takes place from 8 – 10 November at the Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Square.

The performance section runs from 17-19 November at the Cockpit Theatre in Marylebone.

The debate: East London – Homophobia & Transphobia, a culture and arts perspective is on 15 November at Rich Mix in Shoreditch / Bethnal Green.

Events, debates and workshops run from 7 to 20 November at the above venues as well as  West Thames College, Gay’s the Word, MOSAIC Youth Centre and Ku Bar.
